Undertaking Research

UNDERTAKING RESEARCH

In this part of my assignment, I will be discussing and applying a range of research methods and techniques which apply to my music video as well as exploring the purpose of research in order to understand why media producers such as myself undertake research into media, in this instance music videos before and after carry out the research and creating the form of media which they intend to.

Before undertaking such research, it is important to understand the concepts which I have set out to research so this is only possible if a plan is drawn up in order to understand what exactly we are going to research. In terms of my music video, the key things aims which I wish to know after the following research has been undertaken would be; What would my target audience specifically be, What conventions have been successful? What specific elements have made the given conventions successful?, How successful is this genre? What are the key conventions which are associated with this Genre, Are their any examples of this genre being unsuccessful and if so, how and why? Furthermore, what do the audience think of our music video idea or the type of genre presented and also any criticisms or grey areas which may be presented in both?

 The target audience which i have chosen are mostly Youth therefore between across the ages of 15-25 therefore my research will involve people across these age ranges and I believe that all ethnicities will be able to listen to the song however If i were to pin point a particular group, I would say mostly those of Ethnic minorities would listen to this music due to the fact that it may be more applicable to them due to the language used and the nature of the song.

In order to specify my target audience, I believe I would use Quantitative data such as Geo-demographics, Questionnaires and Surveys  in order to see and identifies which areas or which people have been more inclined to listen to my chosen genre of music which is Hip-Hop/Rap. I think that quantitative data would be much more suitable when undertaking researching for my target audience due to the fact that its easily quantifiable therefore would enable me to easily identify my target audience without having to go in depth to the research which may be much more time consuming.

To gather information about Conventions of Hip-Hop/Rap and what may and may or not work for my music video, One of the forms of research methods which I will use would be Qualitative date in the form of Content Analysis of Music Videos, Behind the Scene Videos and Artist Interviews, I believe that this would be a great way in order to gather information about the given area due to the fact that enables the element of comparison and contrast when comparing different ideas and conventions used in music videos of the same genre against my idea which will not only will allow development but allow me to think deeper about my idea in terms of what works and aids a successful music video and what does not.

A further from of Qualitative data which would be used are Forums and Comments would also be used in terms of being able to determine how successful the Genre of my music video has been in general and successful/failures due to the fact that at the end of the day, media products are made to fulfil the audience therefore through the use of forums and comments, it would enable me to further understand the needs of the audience and grasp the way they think in order to be able to further better my Idea as well as my music video.

The use of Reviews whether in the form of videos whereby people may record their live reactions to a particular video or a written review of similar music on sites such as Fanzine websites which would also be key here due to the fact that constructive criticism does really go a long way in the sense that it enables us to gather views once again from the most important group in this process which would therefore once again enable myself and my colleagues to understand the audience's feelings and reactions.
